What do you know about Gemmotherapy?

A range of macerates from organic harvested young shoots and buds

Purasana Puragem Organic Gemmotherapy

Purasana is constantly in search of products that offer added value for our general well-being. Consequently, the quality of the ingredients takes precedence for us and we opted for an organic glycerine macerate (following in the footsteps of Dr. Pol Henry), also known as mother macerate. The organic buds, young shoots and young leaves that we use grow in the mountains and are harvested one by one with the greatest care by local gatherers, with respect for the environment and their surroundings. Only a small percentage of buds and shoots (varies by species) are picked from the plant or tree so the harvesting doesn’t destroy the plants. The buds, shoots and leaves are then macerated in the laboratory for a few weeks, in a specific mixture of water, alcohol and organic plant glycerine before being filtered and bottled. This results in the end product: an organic glycerine macerate of buds, shoots and leaves.

Use of Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy is taken by mouth, diluting 5-15 drops in a glass of water daily. The handy drop counter provides an easy means of measuring out the highly concentrated macerate. The low alcohol content means that this can be given to children or animals without any problem (consult a specialist for the correct dose). The recommendation is to follow a long-term course of treatment (at least two months) and to take the drops about 15 minutes before meals. A 50 ml bottle is sufficient for a course of 2 to 2.5 months. To treat pets, the recommendation is to administer one drop of glycerine macerate for animals weighing 5 to 10 kg. Many therapists currently recommend the use of this gemmotherapy from plant buds owing to the mild approach and lack of side effects.

What is Gemmotherapy?

The word gemmotherapy comes from the Latin word ‘gemma’, which means ‘precious stone’, but also ‘bud’. Gemmotherapy is a form of herbal medicine that uses the potential offered by plants. The bud is embryonic tissue in the intensive cell multiplication phase that contains full evolutionary potential; all the genetic information and the genetic footprint of the entire plant. The bud encompasses the total evolution of its species, all the power of the plant’s future. Buds contain more nucleic acid (genetic information) than other tissue, as well as minerals, vitamins and various growth factors such as hormones and enzymes and above all, the sap in the buds found on trees in the spring. Regeneration, cell stimulation and drainage are among the most important developments that take place during young growth.

History of Gemmotherapy

Gemmotherapy has its roots in the Middle Ages, among the alchemists of the time who even then made use of the significant therapeutic value of tree buds. In the mid- 20th century, Dr Pol Henry, an astute physics student and Flemish doctor, put forward the hypothesis that the meristem (group of stem cells) contains all the information and energy needed for the growth and development of trees. He macerated buds and young shoots in three different yet complementary fluids and thereby discovered a means of extracting their ‘archetypal nature’ in the form of a concentrated mother macerate. The work of Dr. Henry was published in the early 1970s, along with the results of his clinical studies and after his death in 1988 the term Gemmotherapy was devised to refer to this new field of phytotherapy, in which he was a pioneer.
