Pu-erh tea comes from the same tea plant as green and black tea, the Camellia sinensis. The potency is not coincidental. The big difference is that Pu-erh tea comes from a totally different region, there where the shrub can grow to tree.
The plant only grows in southwest China, in the province Yunnan around the Pu-erh region, to which the name of the tea is derived from. It is only there that the incomparable climatic conditions occur, which are absoutely needed by the trees for them to be able to thrive well. In all other areas, they literally faint away.

The Pu-erh trees are able to grow in the wild in full glory because of the climate of this region. Out of small tea plants which are growing in a strange way, ancient trees occur with very powerful, unusually large leaves.
